31 May 2017 - Mayor wants contaminated smelting plant shut down

PAMPANGA -- San Simon Mayor Leonora Wong of this town wants the immediate shut down of a smelting plant where the soil and ground in its vicinity is allegedly contaminated with lead.

On Wednesday after monitoring the plant, Wong told SunStar Pampanga that the local government will issue a cease and desist order if the firm -- Celica Lead Company -- will not stop operations.

31 May 2017 - Japanese experts to study monitoring of Candaba river

PAMPANGA -- Japanese experts were in this town Wednesday, May 31, for the site visit as part of a study development of a river water level monitoring system using wireless network and information communications technology.

The experts which included Hachihei Kurematsu, Tomoyoshi Nishizumi, Megumu Niori, and Professor Yashushi Fuwa were welcomed by town officials.

PAMPANGA -- Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) assistant Regional Director Araceli San Jose said she was impressed by the improvements of the public services and facilities of the Pampanga Provincial Government during the 2017 Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) assessment held at the Executive House, Capitol Building on Monday.

San Jose specifically lauded the Provincial Government's efforts to make wheelchair ramps accessible to persons with disabilities (PWDs) and its move to provide disaster management brochures readily translated in Kapampangan through its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

31 May 2017 - Candaba schools get e-learning system

PAMPANGA -- Three schools here received e-learning systems as part of the town’s partnership with the APT J3 Programme for rural areas.

The beneficiaries include Bahay Pare National High School, Pulung Gubat High School and Mangga High School. The systems were discussed during the visit of the Japanese partners of the project at the town hall Wednesday, May 31.

31 May 2017 - Senator hails passage of free college tuition bill

MABALACAT CITY --- Senator Loren Legarda hailed the Senate’s approval of the bicameral conference committee report on the proposed Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.

Legarda, co-sponsor of the bill, said that the measure institutionalizes the provision of full tuition fee subsidy for students enrolled in all of the country’s state universities and colleges (SUCs), local universities and colleges (LUCs) and in state-run technical-vocational institutions.

CLARK FREEPORT -- A businessman reiterated his call to local government units (LGUs) around the Freeport to prepare for the full operation of Clark International Airport (CRK).

Rene Romero, vice chair of the Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated, said that people in Pampanga and Central Luzon will inherit the social cost that will be brought about by the Clark airport operation.

MABALACAT CITY --- The Commission on Election (Comelec) En Banc has affirmed the First Division’s decision cancelling Mabalacat City Mayor Marino “Boking” Morales’ certificate of candidacy in the May 2016 election.

In a 13-page decision, the Comelec En Banc stated that it sees no cogent reason to depart from the assailed resolution of the Comelec First Division.

PAMPANGA -- The Department of Justice (DOJ) inaugurated on Tuesday, May 30, the new Hall of Justice located at the Diosdado Macapagal Government Center in Barangay Maimpis.

Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez and Prosecutor General Victor Sepulveda led the inauguration of the new building worth P70-million, together with DOJ Assistant Secretary Juvy Manwong, Governor Lilia Pineda and City of San Fernando Mayor Edwin Santiago.

PAMPANGA -- Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Central Luzon Director Antonio Molano, Jr. on Monday, May 29, clarified that the “controversial” platform constructed in the middle of Balimbing Creek is only temporary

Molano said that the facility was only constructed to serve as craneway or passage for the machinery which is tasked to drive heavy materials in line with the construction.

PAMPANGA -- Shun Ichiro Mallari, a 23 year-old transgender, was crowned Miss Gay Fernandino Festival Queen 2017 during the coronation night held over the weekend at the Heroes Hall.

“This is my second attempt in this pageant and I’m happy that I’ve finally won the title. I want to spread awareness about HIV, so that everyone will be knowledgeable on what it is and how to prevent it,” Mallari said in an interview.

PAMPANGA -- The City Government of San Fernando has vowed to collect and properly dispose the garbage that accumulated under the Balimbing bridge.

City Administrator Engineer Fer Limbitco said the announcement came after concerned citizens aired their worry over the growing piles of garbage under the said bridge which hampers the flow of water at Balimbing Creek and Jose Abad Santos Avenue.

CLARK FREEPORT -- Cebu Pacific has added five new routes to its inter-regional network, connecting more islands from Mindanao and Visayas to the rest of the archipelago.

The addition of new routes came after stakeholders, particularly in Mindanao, asked the airline company to improve connectivity of key cities.

MABALACAT CITY -- Drivers in Angeles City who joined the new transportation program GrabTrike have observed an increase of P2,000 to P2,500 in their monthly income.

Councilor Amos Rivera said that majority of the 300 GrabTrike drivers revealed the increase of their income after joining the program.

PAMPANGA -- Stakeholders on weekend raised howlers over a “problem” spotted over the ongoing widening of the Balimbing Bridge along Jose Abad Santos Avenue (Jasa).

The concerned observers, led by volunteer flood czar Engineer Marni Castro, said that a platform was constructed by the contractor of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) right in the middle of Balimbing Creek near the bridge, which is now hampering the flow of water as trash and garbage from the upstream have accumulated there.

PAMPANGA -- More than 40 boys with ages 7 to 14 years old benefited in a free circumcision operations organized by the municipality of Porac officials.

Board Member David-Dizon said that there are various health benefits from circumcision, such as easier hygiene, decreased risk of urinary tract and sexually transmitted infections, and the prevention of certain penile problems, including penile cancer.

26 May 2017 - Drug surrenderer nabbed in Arayat drug bust

PAMPANGA -- A self-confessed drug user, who voluntarily surrendered to authorities few months ago was arrested in an anti-illegal drug operation launched by local police here.

The 28-year-old Randy Reyes initially joined the group of drug surrenders, who swore not to use illegal drugs, on August 2016, under the Oplan Double Barrel of the Philippine National Police.

26 May 2017 - Municipal towns, cities to accept Philhealth contributions

PAMPANGA -- The 11 towns and two cities of Pampanga are set to accept premium payments from Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth) members.

This came after the mayors of the different local government units (LGUs) of the province and the Philhealth, represented by Central Luzon officer-in-charge Vice President Walter Bacareza, signed a collection and remittance agreement during the Pampanga Mayors League (PML) meeting held at the Executive House, Capitol building on Friday, May 26.

25 May 2017 - 21 drug surrenderers complete Arayat's reformation program

PAMPANGA -- Some 21 drug surrenderers from Arayat town on Wednesday, May 24, completed a 30-day reformation program conducted by the Philippine National Police and the local government.

Superintendent Samuel Sevilla, Arayat chief of police, said that the reformists are the third batch that graduated from the Bahay Pagbabago reformation program.

24 May 2017 - BIR: Counterfeit cigarettes yield P1M-worth fake stamps

PAMPANGA -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue Region 4 on Wednesday, May 24, sampled some of the 60 master cases in question and these all failed the scan test conducted by the bureau’s personnel.

The P1 million-worth fake tax stamps on the suspected counterfeit cigarettes were discovered inside an abandoned container van in Barangay San Isidro in Bacolor town last May 16.

24 May 2017 - P135,000-worth of ‘firetryk’ turned over to Angeles City

CLARK FREEFORT -- Clark Development Corporation (CDC) recently turned over a unit of a customized P135, 000 worth of three-wheeler motor firefighting vehicle or “firetryk” to the Angeles City Fire station.

Capable of entering narrow streets, the 600 gallon capacity “firetryk” is the first of its kind in the country. It aims to be the first responder to fire incidents.

24 May 2017 - PDEA-Central Luzon chief, 30 other personnel relieved

Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency in Central Luzon Director Juvenal Azurin and more than 30 other personnel of the agency were relieved from their respective posts recently.

MABALACAT CITY -- A daughter of a tricycle driver has completed a bachelor’s degree as Summa Cum Laude at the Mabalacat City College (MCC).

With an average grade of 95.05, Abigail Gramonte of Barangay San Francisco here topped this school year’s batch, finishing Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education at the nine-year-old city college.

23 May 2017 - Lead found in soil of smelting plant

PAMPANGA -- A high reading of lead contamination was found in the soil and grounds of a smelting plant in Barangay San Isidro, San Simon, based on a study conducted by international pollution cleanup body Pure Earth.

Pure Earth, which has been conducting studies in this town since 2011, is a non-profit organization dedicated to solving pollution in low and middle income countries where human health is at risk.

PAMPANGA -- Some 60 master cases of suspected counterfeit cigarettes were discovered inside an abandoned container van in Barangay San Isidro here.

Police reports said that the van was left since March 12 and was recovered last May 16 by police operatives.

22 May 2017 - P20-M building to be constructed for Pampanga university

CLARK FREEPORT -- The Provincial Government of Pampanga and the Police Provincial Office (PPO), as early as now, are preparing for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit to be held at Clark Freeport in November this year.

PAMPANGA -- Amid President Rodrigo Duterte's intense program on peace and order, the crime rate in Pampanga rose by more than one percent during the first quarter of 2017, a police official said.

Pampanga Police Director Joel Consulta said during the Peace and Order Council meeting held at Kingsborough Convention Center on Wednesday that based on data from the Provincial Police Office, a total of 3,408 cases were recorded from January to early May of this year, 39 cases higher compared to the total 3,369 recorded on the same period last year.

7 May 2017 - De Lima welcomes US bill supporting human rights, defense programs

MABALACAT CITY -- Senator Leila de Lima has welcomed a proposed legislation in the US Senate seeking to restrict exports of certain defense articles to the Philippines and to extend support to Filipino human rights defenders and help victims of human rights violations.

De Lima, a known human rights activist, said the US Senate’s proposed measure will subject to international scrutiny the Philippine government’s drug policy which has led in the deaths of thousands of suspected drug offenders, including innocent civilians.

7 May 2017 - Thousands benefit from Mad Dog’s medical mission

ANGELES CITY -- Thousands of Angelenos benefited from a medical mission sponsored by the Mad Dog Motorcycle Club Philippines.

Chairman Tony Mamac of Barangay Balibago said that a total of 2,586 patients received medical attention during the medical mission which included free examination and medicines (856 patients), eye examination (500), circumcision (336), tooth extraction with free medicines (168), feeding (653), acupuncture (36), blood donation (37) and other services.

7 May 2017 - Architects group president to strengthen professional programs

PAMPANGA -- United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Angeles City Chapter president Andy Gulapa on Sunday, May 7, vowed to support fellow architects to earn points under the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program as required by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) for the renewal of licences. According to PRC, the CPD as mandatory requirement in the renewal of professional license under Section 10 of R.A. 10912 shall be implemented after the effectivity of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) which will be in March 2017.

Gulapa said that their group will help in ensuring that the best possible CPD programs are implemented for their members.

Shoppers and valued customers of SM Supermalls jumped, crawled and slide their way out the 14 feet by 53 feet inflatable obstacle course installed at the 7th level Roofdeck of the mall building.

CLARK FREEPORT -- An OFFICIAL of Angeles City has urged the Philippine Airlines (PAL) management to make Clark International Airport its major hub.

Councilor Carmelo "Pogi" Lazatin Jr. said "the most feasible, logical, beneficial and economically profitable alternative for Philippine Airlines is to make Clark its major hub in the next five years and establish a stronghold in the northern part of the Philippines.”

7 May 2017 - DOT-Central Luzon sets 2nd bike tour expo

7 May 2017 - BIR files 3 criminal cases vs tax evaders

PAMPANGA -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue Region 4 (RR4) filed criminal complaints the other day with the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor of Tarlac against Charoen Pokphand Foods Philippines Corporation (Charoen) and its president, Udomsak Aksornphakdee and Roberto Hara operating the trade name ROH Trading for unlawful pursuit of business and violations pertaining to receipts and invoices.

Charoen is a stock company duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission engaged in agri-business and the production and sales of food products. Its principal office is located at Unit 1C-1D LSC Building, Lazatin Boulevard, Dolores Homsite in the City of San Fernando. 7 May 2017 - Drug surrenderer killed in shootout with cops

PAMPANGA -- A former drug surrenderer of San Simon was killed in a police operation conducted in Barangay San Jose here after refusing to be flagged down in a checkpoint.

According to Police Officer 2 Jane Genobili, their station was notified by a concerned citizen that an unidentified man onboard a red motorcycle was roaming the streets of San Jose village while carrying a pistol.

5 May 2017 - 2 drug pushers arrested in Guagua town

PAMPANGA -- Two drug pushers were arrested by the police in a drug bust operation in Guagua, Pampanga on Thursday, May 4.

Senior Superintendent Joel Consulta, Pampanga acting police director, identified the suspects as Denden Ocampo, 32, of Barangay San Pedro and Noel Tungol, 40, a resident of Barangay Bancal, both in Guagua town.

5 May 2017 - NGCP gives school supplies to 15 public schools

PAMPANGA -- The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) distributed school supplies to different public elementary schools in the province Friday, May 5.

NGCP Corporate Initiative and Advocacies Division Head Lida May Lopez said that the program dubbed as “Gamit ni Bulilit” is part of the corporate social responsibility of NGCP which aims to assist indigent and deserving grade one to grade three students in their host communities.

5 May 2017 - Apalit hires 136 students under summer job program

PAMPANGA -- The local government here, together with the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole), recently hired some 136 indigent students under the Special Program for Employment of Students (Spes).

4 May 2017 - DepEd-Central Luzon conducts training for Senior High teachers

PAMPANGA -- Some 2,735 Senior High School teachers teaching different academic subjects in Central Luzon are undergoing the 18-day mass trainings being conducted by the Department of Education Central Luzon Regional Office in line with the full implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program, particularly the Senior High School (SHS) Program.

About 600 English teachers, 215 Filipino teachers and 63 ICT/Research SHS teachers were simultaneously trained on April 9 to 12 and April 17 to 30 held at Ann Raquel's Hillside Resort and Hotel in Olongapo City, Otel Pampanga, in City of San Fernando, Pampanga, and Eurotel in Angeles City respectively.

4 May 2017 - Health official: No outbreak in respiratory, skin diseases

PAMPANGA -- The Municipal Health Officer of San Simon recently dispelled allegations that numerous residents of the 12 villages here have fallen victim to respiratory and skin diseases caused by pollution.

Dr. Marline Bagtas-Dela Rosa said that there are no records of an epidemic or spread of respiratory and skin diseases among residents, especially those residing in villages near the Quezon road where various manufacturing plants are located.

3 May 2017 - Kin of slain housewife raise bounty for killer’s arrest

PAMPANGA -- The family of Catherine Tobias-Delos Santos, the housewife who was recently killed by their fishpond caretaker, has raised a cash reward for any information leading to the arrest of the suspect.

The 29-year old Tobias-Delos Santos was stabbed to death by their stay-in worker Rodolfo Yupio, Jr. in their home in Barangay Lanang shortly after midnight of Sunday, April 30.

PAMPANGA -- The Local Government Unit of Magalang in coordination with the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday conducted an anti-rabies vaccination drive in Barangay San Agustin.

Hundreds of pets, usually cats and dogs were injected with the vaccine that is good for six months to one year, according to the DA.

2 May 2017 - Man attacks couple over cash advance

For allegedly refusing to give in to a request for a cash advance, a couple from Lanang village, Candaba were attacked by their fishpond caretaker in their house shortly after midnight last Sunday.

Superintendent Paul Gamido, Candaba police chief, identified the fatality as Catherine Tobias De los Santos, 29, of San Luis, Pampanga. Injured was Jake Joseph “Jackie” de los Santos, 29, of Lanang village.
